The moment of creation – unique as always
The moment of creation – it’s always a special moment and this time was no different. Here is the story:
It was just a typical autumn Sunday afternoon in Northern Germany. Stormy and rainy. It felt like the wind came from the front, no matter in which direction you looked. And the rain didn’t come straight down from the sky but horizontal and from the front as well. For many people this leads to depression, but for others, like me, to inspiration.
In hindsight I asked myself the following question about the Ladybug: What was there first? The shape, the folding design or was it perhaps the trade name? The answer: it all came simultaneously in less than a second. Bang! In the blink of an eye the entire concept was there.
We now know that the rule of 10 % inspiration, 90 % perspiration is nonsense. In our case, the reality was more like 1 % to 99 %. But we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
The expectation – highest quality is a must
If your name is Sören and your hair is blond as well, nobody is surprised when you fall in the tradition of skandinavian design.
But in all seriousness, our expectations are
- keep it simple – but in highest quality
- sleek design – minimalistic and aesthetic, with no frills
- highest functionality – is has to work
- with the x-factor – not boring, like none other
Well? Did we achieve that? You shouldn’t expect an objective answer from me, but yes, of course we archieved our goal on every single point. 100 %, oh what the heck, we’re 200 % saticefied.
The process of prototying – blood, sweat and tears
It’s typical in Northern Germany not to talk too much but just to do. Does this mean we first created a blueprint? Nope. Actions speak louder than words. So we just started building.
Later that stormy, rainy weekend, I built a model on a scale of 1:2. It was made of cardboard, because that material was available and easy to handle. What a relief: the folding technique worked perfectly.
Then we built the prototype. It was made of glued wood, but to be honest, we couldn’t complete it in one weekend. In spite of the good equipment of our workshop, we noticed that our mechanical skills were limited. Sleek design can not afford hasty craftmanship.
And then we had the idea to connect the boards to make it portable. And once an idea arises, there’s no going back…
Swearing and reyoicing, failures and successes, blood, sweat and tears – I think this mixture describes the whole process. And in the hindsight thinking back: it was great fun!
Our clear target – Go into production
Should it remain a model made of cardboard? Or a few prototypes? No way! Our dream is many, many ladybugs all over the world. The target: The stool has to go into production. But we have to be realistic: it’s not so easy to carry out production and marketing oneselves. We have an open mind for all other options. Whether it’s crowdfunding or a license solution, everything is imaginable.
About the designer and team
I’m not a professional designer. Why? Because I’m 19 years old. And because I’m still in my apprenticeship becoming an industrial mechanic. Nevertheless the Ladybug is no one-hit wonder. We have dealt with the design of furniture for many years. “We” means my father and I. The ladybug-project became a collective one and there’s a handful of other people who supported us with our ladybug-website. I would have never come so far without this support – many thanks to all my fellow campaigners.
